Una organización solidaria con más de 700.000 socios en todo el mundo

Este mediodía se ha celebrado en Benidorm la tradicional ‘Poppy Appeal’ organizada por la Royal British Legion. El evento consiste en la venta de amapolas de tela, mayoritariamente confeccionadas por personas con diversidad disfuncionalidad, cuyos ingresos se destinan a ayudar ex militares británicos y sus familias que han padecido las consecuencias de los conflictos bélicos.

En el ‘Poppy Appeal’ ha participado el alcalde, Toni Pérez, y la primera teniente de alcalde, Ana Pellicer, representando a la corporación municipal. Ambos han desfilado junto a los miembros de la legión británica desde la calle Castellón hasta Ametlla de Mar recorriendo parte del Paseo de Levante. En el desfile han intervenido también las gaitas y tambores de los Torrevieja Pipes and Drums, Chelsea Pensioners (soldados pensionistas del Hospital Real de Chelsea) y los Standards o portadores de estandartes.

Tras la marcha, en el escenario preparado en Ametlla de Mar, Ana Pellicer se ha dirigido a las personas congregadas y les ha dado la bienvenida a la ciudad y felicitado por el gran trabajo que hace la Royal British Legion, a través de la Campaña de la Amapola ‘Poppy Appeal’” de la que ha subrayado es “un movimiento ejemplar a favor de las personas que más lo necesitan”.

“Aquí en Benidorm –ha dicho Pellicer- estáis en vuestra casa” dirigiéndose a los británicos que han escogido la ciudad para fijar su residencia y, “en nombre de toda la corporación y el pueblo de Benidorm” ha animado a la a la Royal British Legión a “seguir dando ese ejemplo, a seguir defendiendo los valores que nos unen, a velar por la inclusión de los más necesitados y a la convivencia de los pueblos sin distinción de fronteras o de idiomas”.

Junto a Ana Pellicer, han intervenido en el acto el coordinador Robin Hargrave; la vice cónsul en Alicante, Elisabeth Bell; el comandante del ejército británico, Major Allen, y el presidente de la entidad organizadora,  Donald Cubbon.

La Royal Bristish Legion es una entidad sin ánimo de lucro que está formada por más de 700.000 británicos repartidos por todo el mundo. En nuestro país cuentan con alrededor de 4.000 miembros. Calculan que, con la celebración de la ‘Poppy Appeal’ se venden en todo el globo unos 25 millones de amapolas solidarias.
