14 de octubre de 2015.- El Ayuntamiento de Villajoyosa y el Museo Arqueológico Nacional (MAN) firmaron hace unas semanas un convenio de colaboración que contempla el préstamo de uno de los ejemplares mejor conservados de los lingotes de plomo que transportaba el Bou Ferrer. Este lingote, que ya se encuentra en las dependencias del museo nacional, se cederá por tres años prorrogables por plazos de 5 años, para ser expuesto en su exposición permanente.

El traslado de la pieza tuvo el pasado 24 de septiembre por Feltrero, empresa especializada en transporte nacional e internacional, embalaje de obras de arte y montaje de exposiciones, y ya está en las instalaciones del MAN donde se procederá a su limpieza y restauración durante los meses de octubre y noviembre, para prepararlo para su exposición en una de las vitrinas de la sala dedicada a las producciones hispanas.

El Bou Ferrer, de más de 30 metros de eslora, transportaba en sus bodegas unas 3.000 ánforas de salsas de pescado procedentes de Cádiz y, a ambos lados de la quilla, lingotes de plomo de excepcional peso (unos 70 kilos) con varias inscripciones. Entre las inscripciones hay una mención a IMP (erator) AVG (ustus) GER (manicus), que demuestra que los lingotes eran propiedad personal de un emperador de Roma, probablemente el propio Nerón. También aparecen las letras CCIIX que corresponde al peso del lingote, en libras (208 libras = 68 kg).

Este lingote, como otros de este cargamento, presenta un hueco profundo en la base de uno de los lados largos que servía para arrastrar el lingote y para sujetarlo durante su transporte en una barcaza fluvial hasta Hispalis, el puerto donde sin lugar a dudas los lingotes llegaron para ser cargados en la nave. Los análisis de isotopos del plomo (realizados por el Laboratorio Nazionale del Gran Sasso-INFN, Assergi, Italia) señalan al distrito minero de Sierra Morena oriental, y más concretamente a la zona de Linares-La Carolina, como su lugar de fabricación.

The National Archaeological Museum receives an ingot of the Bou Ferrer shipwreck

October 14, 2015.- The City Council and the National Archaeological Museum (MAN) signed a few weeks ago a cooperation agreement which includes the loan of one of the best preserved lead ingots from the Bou Ferrer shipwreck. The ingot is already at the laboratories of restoration of the National Museum, to which it has been transferred for three years renewable for periods of five, to be exhibited in its permanent exhibition.

The transfer of the piece took place last September 24 by Feltrero, a company specialized in domestic and international transport, packaging artwork and staging exhibitions, and will be restored at the MAN during October and November, to prepare it for the exhibition in one of the displays of the room dedicated to the Hispanic productions.

The Bou Ferrer, a shipwreck more than 100 feet long, carried in its hold about 3,000 amphoras full of fish sauces from Cadiz and on either side of the keel, lead ingots of exceptional weight (150 lb.) with various inscriptions. Among the inscriptions there are mentions to an IMP (erator) AVG (ustus) GER (manicus), which shows that the ingots were personal property of a Roman emperor, probably Nero himself. The CCIIX letters corresponding to the weight of the ingot, in pounds (208 Roman pounds = 68 kg = 150 lb.), also appear.

This ingot, like others in this shipment, presents a deep hole in the base of one of the long sides which served to drag the ingot and to hold it during transport in a river barge to Hispalis, the port where undoubtedly ingots were loaded on the Bou Ferrer. The lead isotope analysis (performed by the Laboratory Nazionale INFN Gran Sasso, Assergi, Italy) demonstrate that the mining district of eastern Sierra Morena, and more specifically the area of ​​Linares-La Carolina, was their place of manufacture.
